Are You an AI Fluent Marketer?

Image of an AI fluent marketer. A woman sitting at a desk with futuristic computer screens.

Picture this: you’re sitting at your desk with ten browser tabs open—each one a mix of analytics, content calendars, and “how to” articles about AI tools. You know artificial intelligence could make marketing easier, but with so many options, it’s hard to know where to start or what to trust. Are you an AI fluent marketer? Maybe not yet but after reading this blog post, you’ll have an excellent headstart. I’m Lori Gama, Digital Marketing and AI Consultant. For over 30 years, I’ve helped businesses evolve through every major digital shift—from the dawn of websites to the rise of social media. Today, we’re living through the next big transformation: the AI era. The question isn’t if AI will change marketing. It’s whether you’ll become fluent enough in AI to lead confidently through it. You are either a professional marketer or someone tasked by the boss to “do the marketing” for their company. You did some quick research in Google or ChatGPT or Perplexity.ai and found this blog post. Great! I love helping. Read on… What Does It Mean to Be “AI Fluent”? Being AI fluent doesn’t mean you have to code machine learning models or spend hours tweaking algorithms. AI fluency means you can think with AI—using it as a creative and analytical partner rather than a quick productivity fix. It’s about understanding how to turn business goals into clear, effective AI tasks. Yes: you can actually do that with AI. Here’s what an AI-fluent marketer can do: Translate business goals into AI-assisted tasks Prompt effectively (multi-step, context-aware prompts that produce accurate, brand-aligned results) Evaluate AI outputs critically and iteratively improve them Integrate multiple tools—like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Descript, and Gamma—to build end-to-end workflows Automate repetitive marketing tasks with systems like Zapier or Notion AI Understand the ethical and brand implications of using AI-generated content In other words, being AI fluent means you’re not just using AI—you’re collaborating with it. Translating Business Goals into AI Tasks Think of AI as a powerful intern—fast, eager, and capable, but only as clear as your instructions. If you ask, “Write a social media post,” you’ll get a generic result. But if you say: “You’re a social media strategist for a local spa. Write three Instagram captions that emphasize relaxation and luxury, each with a different call to action,” —you’ll see the difference instantly. AI fluency means you know how to think before you prompt. You define the business goal first, then break it down into specific steps AI can support: Analyze: Ask AI to review campaign data or audience engagement patterns. Ideate: Generate creative angles, headlines, or campaign ideas. Execute: Draft copy, video scripts, or email sequences. Refine: Use AI feedback loops to improve tone, clarity, or alignment with brand voice. That’s how you turn AI into your strategy partner—not just your task assistant. Translating Business Goals into AI Tasks Think of AI as a powerful intern—fast, eager, and capable, but only as clear as your instructions. If you ask, “Write a social media post,” you’ll get a generic result. But if you say: “You’re a social media strategist for a local spa. Write three Instagram captions that emphasize relaxation and luxury, each with a different call to action. Ask me clarifying questions until you’re 95% certain of giving me the best three captions possible.” —you’ll see the difference instantly. Here’s what that looks like in practice:Let’s say your goal is to increase lead generation from your website. (That should be your TOP goal, right?)You could: Use ChatGPT to brainstorm lead magnet ideas that speak to your audience’s pain points. Ask Perplexity to research trending topics in your industry. Use Gamma to design a visually appealing lead magnet or presentation. Automate the follow-up process with Zapier, sending thank-you emails and tracking new leads in your CRM. See the difference? The goal stays strategic (generate leads), but you’re translating that big-picture aim into smaller, specific actions AI can actually help you execute. That’s how you turn AI into your strategy partner—not just your task assistant. Mastering the Art of Prompting Prompting is the new professional literacy. Just like marketers once learned SEO keywords or social media algorithms, today’s marketers must learn how to prompt with precision. A good prompt tells AI what role to take, what context to use, what format you need, and how success is defined. For example: Basic (and poor) prompt: “Write a blog post about summer marketing trends.” AI-fluent prompt: “You are a senior content strategist. Write a 600-word blog post for small business owners about 2026 marketing trends, focusing on social media engagement. Use an upbeat, professional tone and include a CTA to follow for weekly insights. Ask me clarifying questions until you’re 95% certain of giving me the best output possible.” The second version doesn’t just request output—it sets up context, style, and purpose. And by including that last sentence, you’re making AI (whether it be ChatGPT or another LLM) do the heavy lifting for you. That’s what AI fluency looks like. Integrating AI Tools for a Seamless Workflow In 2025, being an AI-fluent marketer means knowing how to weave multiple tools into your daily workflow. Each one serves a unique purpose: ChatGPT for brainstorming, strategy outlines, and writing drafts. This has become my second brain. I’ve been using it since it launched in 2022. I’ve saved over 8,000+ hours of time since then with it and other AI tools, such as the ones below. Perplexity for fast, fact-checked research. I use this tool constantly, Monday through Friday. When I’m flying through research, I feel like Trinity in The Matrix—downloading

AI Agents vs. AI Automation – The Future of Lead Generation

AI Agents vs. AI Automations - picture of a robot typing

Introduction: Why AI Matters in Lead Generation In the digital age, businesses and nonprofits rely on speed and personalization to capture and convert leads. The problem? Most organizations either respond too slowly or fail to follow up at all. Enter artificial intelligence (AI), a game-changer in modern lead generation. But not all AI is created equal. Read more about: AI Agents vs. AI Automation – The Future of Lead Generation… There’s a vast difference between AI Automation and AI Agents, and understanding how they work could determine whether your business skyrockets or stays stagnant. If you’ve been relying on traditional lead management or basic automation, you might be missing out on conversions, revenue, and long-term customer relationships. Let’s break down how these two technologies work, how they handle lead generation differently, and which one you should be using to stay ahead of your competition. What is AI Automation? AI Automation follows predefined rules to execute repetitive tasks efficiently. It’s like a well-trained assistant that never deviates from the script. Key Features of AI Automation: Sends automated responses after a form submission. Schedules follow-up emails based on pre-set conditions. Categorizes leads into CRM databases without human intervention. Triggers workflows, such as assigning a lead to a salesperson. Limitations of AI Automation: Lacks adaptability—can’t make real-time decisions based on unique lead inputs. Doesn’t engage in conversations or analyze lead intent. Relies entirely on pre-programmed rules without learning from interactions. AI Automation is great for basic workflows, but it falls short when it comes to personalized and dynamic interactions that convert leads into customers. What is an AI Agent? AI Agents think, analyze, and adapt to different scenarios, providing a more human-like and engaging experience for leads. Key Features of AI Agents: Analyzes lead details to craft personalized responses. Engages leads in real-time through email, chat, or SMS. Qualifies leads by detecting patterns, sentiment, and intent. Can book meetings, answer complex questions, and nurture prospects without human intervention. Why AI Agents Are a Game-Changer: Unlike AI Automation, AI Agents don’t just execute tasks—they optimize and refine lead interactions based on data-driven insights. They simulate human conversation, making prospects feel valued rather than just another number in the system. How AI Automation Handles a Lead Form Submission Imagine a lead visits your marketing website and fills out your contact form. If AI Automation is in place, here’s how the process unfolds: The system recognizes a new lead submission. An automated response is sent: This is usually a pre-written email confirming their submission. The lead is added to your CRM. A task is assigned to a salesperson (or you) for manual follow-up. If no action is taken, an automated follow-up sequence might trigger. ✅ Pros: Fast, efficient, works well for businesses with a high volume of leads. ❌ Cons: No personalization, no real engagement, lower chances of conversion. How an AI Agent Handles a Lead Form Submission Now, let’s see how an AI Agent would handle the same scenario: A lead fills out the form. The AI Agent analyzes their input in real time. A personalized response is generated: If the lead selects a $5K+ budget for SEO, the AI Agent might send:“Hi [Name], thanks for reaching out! Since you’re interested in high-level SEO services, we’d love to discuss our advanced strategies that increase revenue. Would you like to book a call this week?” The AI Agent continues the conversation, answering FAQs and addressing concerns. It can automatically book a call, ensuring immediate engagement. ✅ Pros: Instant personalization, higher engagement, increased conversions. ❌ Cons: Requires AI training and setup (but pays off in the long run!). Real-World Applications for Businesses and Nonprofits AI Automation and AI Agents are used across various industries to streamline lead generation and customer engagement. Here’s how different businesses leverage them: Marketing Agencies AI Automation: Sends scheduled emails. AI Agent: Engages leads in conversations, recommends services, and books calls. HVAC Companies AI Automation: Schedules service appointments. AI Agent: Predicts system failures and proactively reaches out to customers. Nonprofits AI Automation: Sends thank-you emails to donors. AI Agent: Analyzes donor behavior and suggests personalized fundraising strategies. Large Real Estate Companies AI Automation: Updates property listings. AI Agent: Analyzes market trends and suggests pricing strategies. For more insights on AI-driven lead generation, check out this Forbes article on AI in sales. Which One is Right for Your Business? ✅ Use AI Automation if you need basic lead follow-up with minimal customization. ✅ Use an AI Agent if you want dynamic engagement, instant responses, and a smarter sales funnel. For most businesses, AI Agents offer a higher return on investment by converting more leads into paying clients. Final Thoughts: The Time to Implement AI is Now AI in lead generation isn’t a futuristic concept—it’s happening right now. Businesses leveraging AI Agents are winning more leads, closing more deals, and outpacing competitors who still rely on manual follow-ups. If you’re not using AI to enhance your lead response time and engagement, you’re already behind. 🚀 Ready to revolutionize your lead generation? Let’s discuss how AI can grow your business today. How to Quickly Get Started Using ChatGPT

an African-American business owner, wearing glasses, meeting with his team and communicating marketing data to them. Illustration-style.

You keep hearing about ChatGPT and you’re finally ready to get started. It might feel like an overwhelming and unfamiliar task but don’t worry: you don’t need to master every nuance of AI to start benefiting from it. One of the most user-friendly tools out there is ChatGPT, a conversational AI developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT is a LLM: Language Learning Model. Below, we’ll explore how to quickly get started using ChatGPT, plus real-world examples of how it can transform your work—whether you’re a nonprofit writing a grant or a local electrical company looking to create educational video scripts for your YouTube channel. Subscribe to my newsletter  How to Quickly Get Started Using ChatGPT Create an Account Head over to chat.openai.com and follow the instructions to create a free OpenAI account. Once logged in, you’ll be able to start using ChatGPT almost immediately. Craft Your Prompt Think of ChatGPT as a knowledgeable teammate. The clearer your instructions (or “prompt”), the better the output. For example, if you need a blog outline, specify the style, length, and tone you’re looking for. Use more than one prompt. I like to call this: priming the pump. Metaphor: Before you can get the good water from a pump, you have to move the handle up and down until the good water comes flowing out. Sort of the same thing when using prompts with ChatGPT. Don’t just give it one prompt: give it two or three before you let it give you the content you’re after. My Hot Tip for a More Successful Outcome with ChatGPT: Set it up for success. A foolproof way for beginners to craft more excellent outcomes is this: after you’ve provided your prompt, ask it: Is there anything else you need to know from me in order to do an excellent job on the content you are about to provide? In the example below, you’ll see my prompt and below that, you’ll see ChatGPT’s response  Framework to get a list of blog post ideas for Women’s History Month: Prompt 1:  ChatGPT’s Response: Here’s the answer I gave it: Here’s the information it gave me (below). Be sure you check out the information yourself. ChatGPT can make mistakes, as of early 2025. (Note: I only pasted the first 2 examples). Good information, right? It would have taken me a few hours to research and find all that information prior to 2022, before ChatGPT launched. Review and Refine ChatGPT might not get everything perfect on the first try. Read through the AI-generated content, make edits, and re-prompt ChatGPT with additional details or corrections. It seems to like the word “tailored” and tends to overuse it.  In fact, there are many default words ChatGPT relies on. Here’s a list of commonly used words and phrases that ChatGPT tends to use a lot. Be sure to tell it not to use any of those words.  Stay Informed As with all technology, ChatGPT keeps evolving. Keep an eye on new features, integrations, and best practices shared by OpenAI and the broader user community. Why Use ChatGPT at All? Here’s one reason that’s pretty important: A report by IBM found that businesses using “AI infused virtual agents” can reduce customer service costs by up to 30% while improving customer satisfaction and loyalty. Also, by using ChatGPT, you’re using some of the most advanced language capabilities AI has to offer, enabling you to work smarter, not harder. Example Use Case #1: Nonprofit Grant Writing Nonprofits often operate with limited staff and resources, making grant writing a time-consuming challenge. Here’s how ChatGPT can streamline the process: Outline the Grant Proposal Prompt ChatGPT to generate a structured outline that includes sections like “Executive Summary,” “Project Description,” “Budget,” and “Measurable Outcomes.” Be sure to “prime the pump” so it ends up knowing who the target audience is; what the goal is; what is your expected outcome. You know: set it up for success. Draft Paragraphs Ask ChatGPT to expand each section into a first draft. Specify details about your organization’s mission, the community you serve, and any key data points you want highlighted. Review and Personalize Edit the AI-generated text to ensure it aligns with your nonprofit’s voice and goals. Add real-life examples and statistics to strengthen credibility. Proof and Polish Use ChatGPT again to proofread, check grammar, or suggest clearer phrasing. You could choose to use another AI agent: Grammarly or Jasper.ai. The result? A solid grant proposal in a fraction of the time it usually takes. Outcome: By mastering ChatGPT, a nonprofit can save hours—if not days—of writing and rewriting, freeing staff to focus on relationship-building with donors and the communities they serve. Finally, your staff will have more time to concentrate on other important tasks now that they know how to save time with AI. I encourage you to experiment with Claude; Jasper.ai and/or Brandwell (formerly: Content At Scale). I’ve experimented with all of these, plus, ChatGPT since 2022. They continually get better and better! If you consider yourself a novice with AI writing solutions, I recommend you start with ChatGPT or Claude. Example Use Case #2: Local Electrical Company Video Scripts Even a small local business like an electrical company can benefit greatly from ChatGPT. Imagine you want to create a series of educational videos for your customers on home safety, EV charging, and more. ChatGPT can help: Generate Topics and Titles Prompt ChatGPT for video topic ideas that resonate with homeowners, such as “Top Five Ways to Prevent Electrical Hazards in Your Home” or “EV Charging Basics for Beginners.” (Remember my advice elsewhere in this blog post.) Create a Script Outline Ask ChatGPT to produce a script outline including an introduction, key talking points, safety warnings, and a clear call-to-action at the end. Do not let it be your final draft. You’re the expert. Edit the script to your liking. Draft the Full Script Once you approve the outline, let ChatGPT flesh out each point. It can add friendly language, technical details, or anecdotes to keep

AI Marketing Strategies

AI image created with MidJourney depicting a female CEO presenting AI Marketing Strategies to her eager team.

Trying to grasp the full scope of AI with the human mind alone is like attempting to cradle the entire ocean in a single seashell. Impossible. Even if you choose to focus on your industry alone, it’s a monumental task. So for just a few minutes right now: let’s explore a handful of ways that you can grow your business and make it more efficient and, thus, more profitable with some AI Marketing Strategies. AI Marketing Strategies Here are a few practical AI Marketing Strategies that any small business owner or nonprofit can leverage. One of the most powerful ways to leverage AI in your organization is to create the position of a Chief Of AI: COAI. This person should be someone who is obsessed and fascinated with AI in general. You could actually create your own custom GPT or AI Agent to fulfill this position. Your very own AI Agent or AI Assistant, powered by hundreds of thousands of data points, ready to assist you. But for now, taking baby steps before we take quantum leaps: choose someone on your team who would be capable of guiding your company into the new age of Artificial Intelligence. Do the same for your Marketing Director. She or he should have been learning how to leverage AI in your marketing at least a year ago. But don’t worry: start today and you’ll be ahead of many others. Just don’t wait until tomorrow. You can empower your COAI to create a practical plan to begin integrating AI into your company with the goal of making your company more efficient and profitable. Make a wish list of ways AI can help you and let your mission statement guide you so you never color outside the lines of your values. Here’s an example wish list of practical ways a small business could begin to integrate AI: Customer Support Chatbots What to do: Use an AI-powered chatbot on your website or social media channels to handle common questions, direct customers to resources, and collect information. Benefit: Provides 24/7 support, allowing human agents to focus on more complex tasks. SaaS to try: Intercom – intercom.com ManyChat – manychat.com Predictive Analytics for Sales and Inventory What to do: Use AI tools to analyze sales data, trends, and customer behavior to forecast demand, optimize stock levels, and increase efficiency. Benefit: Reduces the risk of overstocking or shortages, saving time and money. SaaS to try: Pecan – pecan.ai (AI-driven predictive analytics) Automated Email Marketing What to do: Automate your email campaigns by segmenting customers based on behavior, purchase history, or demographics, and sending personalized content at optimal times. Benefit: Improves open rates, click-throughs, and conversions without constant manual input. SaaS to try: ActiveCampaign – activecampaign.com Mailchimp – mailchimp.com Social Media Listening and Analysis What to do: Monitor brand mentions, track industry trends, and analyze sentiment across social platforms using AI-powered tools. Benefit: Helps identify opportunities, manage reputation, and respond quickly to customer feedback. SaaS to try: Brand24 – brand24.com Mention – mention.com Simple Process Automation What to do: Automate repetitive tasks like data entry or invoice processing with AI-powered workflows. Benefit: Frees up staff for higher-value work, saves time, and minimizes human error. SaaS to try: Zapier – zapier.com Make (formerly Integromat) – make.com Practically every SAAS you’ve already been using has most likely integrated AI into “itself” as of two years ago or more recently. You may have already been utilizing AI and not been aware. In fact, when it comes to consumers using AI, 33% of them believe they have used AI in some way, however, it’s likely that 77% of them have used AI. Why Integrate AI? Beyond the practical use cases listed earlier, the potential for growth and innovation is immense. According to a report by PwC, AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, underscoring the significance of adopting AI sooner rather than later. Moreover, an Accenture study revealed that 84% of business leaders believe AI will give their organizations a competitive edge, yet many remain unsure where to begin. Here’s the good news: You’ve already made a fantastic start by reading this post. In fact, the simple truth is that you’re almost certainly already using AI. Whether it’s a built-in feature of your CRM, automated email segmentation, or spam filters in your inbox, AI quietly powers a host of daily tasks. A Pegasystems survey found that while 33% of consumers think they’ve used AI, 77% of them have actually interacted with AI-powered services in some form. Taking Action Today Empower a Chief of AI (COAI) Even if this is just one person on your team with a passion for technology, give them the authority to explore, test, and implement AI solutions. Start Small Pick one or two areas—like chatbots or predictive analytics—to experiment with AI. This allows you to see immediate benefits without feeling overwhelmed. Keep Learning Encourage your marketing team (and anyone else who’s interested) to stay informed about new AI tools. Sign up for webinars, follow tech blogs, and network with peers who have already started integrating AI. The Bottom Line AI is no longer an abstract concept reserved for massive corporations. It’s a thriving, accessible technology that can help any business—big or small—stay competitive, save resources, and reach new heights of profitability. By choosing just a few of the strategies mentioned in this post and making a plan for your own “COAI,” you’ll find yourself well on the way to harnessing the incredible power of AI. So go ahead: take that first step. Explore. Experiment. Because soon enough, AI won’t just be a differentiator for some; it’ll be a necessity for all. And the sooner you dive in, the sooner you’ll reap the benefits of a smarter, more efficient, and more profitable operation.
