This blog post is my response to people, and in particular, “mainstream” media, who don’t seem to understand the underlying meaning of why we are participating in Social Networking.
In particular, media, like ABC News, who, as of today, April 2, 2009, are soliciting comments from people who are “sick” of being involved in Social Networking (“Enough Already! Sick of Social Networking?” http://bit.ly/AYYFn). Obviously, whoever thought to run this story is not participating. In fact, if ABC News were in Twitter, I’m sure they’d be hailing it as the best thing to happen to us, as I hail it below. By the way, I would not have known about this story if I weren’t following @mashable on Twitter in my @PeopleBrowsr dashboard.
Here’s why Social Networking is the best thing to happen for us, as a human race, right now
Dear ABC News:
I am celebrating Social Networking as the best thing to happen to humanity since the Gutenberg press and since the World Wide Web was invented.
There’s a reason that Twitter has grown 1382% in one year: we the tweeple, feel connected to each other, as we go about our day, sending tweets (messages). The philosophy of “help thy neighbor” is practiced as we share resources that greatly benefit others. As information, (along with fun stuff, too) is passed along, we’re building relationships with each other. When it comes time to take it to the next level of actually meeting in person or at least talking on the phone, we feel as though we’re meeting old friends and, in fact, we are. Through Twitter, in particular, I have deepened relationships I already had and I have begun new relationships with like-minded people all over the world. We’re truly a global community (that’s not an oxymoron). We have access to people whom we never would have met in a lifetime. We’re communicating and connecting our thoughts and these thoughts help us grow: we’re E-volving as a human race because of Social Networking.
The Life Stream of thoughts of all of us, but in particular: thought leaders, scientists, writers, film-makers, politicians, non-profit directors, mothers, fathers, and others: should be documented by historians and displayed in museums of the future. Imagine if twitter had existed during other exciting periods in history!
Please read my blog post to see why I say the Web is like the Gutenberg Press was to 14th century people (which led to the Renaissance in Europe) and why Social Networking is OUR Renaissance: http://bit.ly/niZs6
Please folllow me on twitter: http://twitter.com/LoriGama I could not find ABC News on Twitter, other than your affiliate stations. I hope you’ll come join the conversation. Along with many news companies, your closest competitors are already here, on Twitter: @NBCnews and @CBSnews.
