How to Use Facebook Hashtags for Marketing

Even if you know how to use hashtags in Twitter to attract your tribe, you might want to read on because when you use Facebook hashtags in your fan page posts,  your posts can potentially be seen by millions of people searching in Facebook. Twitter does not have nearly as many people who are active daily users as Facebook currently does.

Here’s how to use hashtags for marketing in Facebook:

Tag your posts with one or two hashtags so when people search in Facebook for those topics, they will find your posts. In this screenshot from my fan page, I made certain words be “hastags” by inserting the # symbol in front of them. I used keywords that will interest people who are using #hashtags , such as: #socialmediamarketing, to attract and build a #community and#getmorefans. Now you can do a search for those hashtags (think of them as living keywords) and find this post.

That’s How Your Market With Hashtags in Facebook

You can do the same thing with your posts. Make keywords (that pertain to your services) in your posts be hashtags by placing the number symbol # in front of the word or phrase. Then when people search for that same hashtag in Facebook, they’ll more likely find your post, especially if it was the most recent post in Facebook to mention that hashtag.

Here is Facebook’s definition of hashtags and how to use them:

“Hashtags turn topics and phrases into clickable links in posts on your personal timeline or your Page, and help people find posts about topics they’re interested in. To make a hashtag, write # (the number sign) along with a topic or phrase written as one word and add it to your post (ex: I walked up so many hills today! #SanFrancisco).
When people click a hashtag, they’ll see a feed of posts that have been shared with them that are also using it.” – Facebook

As of now, the algorithmn seems to be showing the most recent mention of the hashtag in the search results – just like Twitter does it.

Ways to use hashtags:

  • If you wish to sincerely express sympathy for people in crisis, make your post be more easily found during a crisis: people who are posting about #blackforestfire in Colorado, for example, can see other posts that are either “public” posts or posts by friends or fan pages they like. As of now, you cannot see search results with hashtags from people who are not your friends in your personal profile, according to TechCrunch: “you’ll only see the comments that you’re authorized to see.” But since fan pages are public, you can see search results from other fan pages, plus the public posts from personal profiles.
  • Make your post findable by your tribe: include hashtags that they would search with. For example, a wedding planner could use the hashtags: #weddingplanner and #brides.
  • Include the city you live in, especially if you own a local business. Make the city name be a hashtag. Like this: #Denver.
